“My 97’s” (Official Video) taken from the album Person of Interest (LIES 057).
I created all aspects of this video over the course of 2015, including 3d animation and rendering, compositing, shooting and design. All of the assets were derived from various environmental aspects within a mile of my apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. All VHS footage was shot in Maria Hernandez park.
The inspiration for “My 97’s” came from the song’s use of field recordings and its original title, “Summer Dread”. The piece loosely traces a summer day in a Brooklyn enveloped by a dark energy. The video explores tensions that exist between humanity and technology. It juxtaposes original VHS footage of people playing handball in the park with a digitally-rendered, high-definition dragon, a symbol of fantasy and entertainment. The visuals also touch on the anxieties of city living, displaying a modern housing unit adorned with the “Fedders” logo–an allusion to the cheaply-made housing complexes that enraged real-world Brooklynites. I was interested in making these real world connections, not to shock or provoke, but to abstract and convey stresses of day-to-day life that people can actually relate to.
